Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such drugs should be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Experts believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle support.
