Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a demand to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge game development, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
